Each year Communities In Schools (CIS) offers a scholarship to a graduating senior (12th grade) from a CIS school or program in memory of Joan Benner Fuller. The annual award provides $1,500 in tuition assistance to one deserving senior towards education at an accredited college/university, business school, trade school, or training program.

Joan Benner Fuller was a member of the Communities In Schools of the Lehigh Valley Board of Directors. Tragically, she died in a car accident in October 2011. Throughout her life, Joan generously volunteered her time and energy to many worthy causes and advocated for access to art and education for all.

She was a graduate of Moravian Seminary for Girls, Pine Manor College and Albion College, earning her Masters in Education at Lehigh University. Joan worked for the Council on International Educational Exchange in New York City and taught English at South Mountain Junior High School. Joan was passionate about the mission of the Society of the Arts of the Allentown Art Museum (SOTA), serving as an active member and President from 2000-2002. She enjoyed being a Docent for the museum, sharing her appreciation for art with school children and others. With her husband Peter she founded Embrace Your Dreams, an organization that impacts the lives of young people of diverse backgrounds through education that promotes positive values, physical skills and sportsmanship. She was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Joan was a member of The Fortnightly Club, Lehigh and Saucon Country Clubs, and was a subscribing member to the Visiting Nurses Association, which supports Sacred Heart Hospitals Hospice and Pediatric Services.

Her family has set up this scholarship in her name to continue her legacy in education.
